Night view of a shrine for Kevin Marzell Leonard, 4500 block of East Capitol Street NE


From a DC police report: On Saturday, March 15, 2014, at approximately 6:08 pm, police officers from the Sixth Patrol District were dispatched to the area of East Capitol Street and Benning Road, NE, Washington DC, for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds in the 4500 block of East Capitol Street, Northeast. DC Fire and EMS transported the victim,identified as Kevin Marzell Leonard, 20, to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This shrine of balloons and a rose is at the corner of Benning Road and East Capitol Street, adjacent to the Shrimp Boat, a well-known local landmark. There have been several slayings near this corner in recent times.

This public street memorial was created by a group of friends, community leaders, and family in a candlelight vigil in Mr. Leonard's memory.

"Gone to soon" shrine to Jonathon Adams, 4300 block of Halley Terrace SE, DC.

From a DC police report: On Thursday, February 27, 2014, at approximately 5:14 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to a call for the report of a man down in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace SE, Washington DC. Upon arrival, they located a juvenile male, identified as Jonathon Adams, 17, suffering from an apparent stab wound. DC Fire and EMS arrived on the scene and transported him to a local hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

I found the expressions of this young man's friends and family very moving and powerful.

Double homicide | Khalid and Emmanuel Bryant, 5000 block of Lee Street NE, DC

From a DC police report: On Friday, February 28, 2014, at approximately 7:45 pm, police officers from the Sixth District responded to a call for a report of a shooting in the 5000 block of Lee Street NE, Washington DC. Upon arrival, they located two adult males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The first shooting victim, identified as Khalid Jamal Bryant, 34, exhibited no signs consistent with life and remained on the scene. DC Fire and EMS transported the second shooting victim, identified as Emmanuel Bryant, 26, to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Maryland, where an autopsy will be performed to ascertain cause and manner of death.

There have been two double homicides in the District in the past couple of weeks.

This shrine of candles, flowers, libations, and teddy bears, was next to a church near the home they were slain in.

Site/crime scene tape for Marquette Hooks, 1300 block of Alabama Avenue SE, DC

From a DC police report: On Sunday, February 23, 2014, at approximately 9:16 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to a call for the sounds of gunshots in the 1300 block of Alabama Avenue SE, Washington DC. Upon arrival, they located two adult males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS  arrived on the scene and transported both victims to a local hospital for treatment. One of the victims, identified as Marquette Hooks, 18, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

This tape marking the site of his death was outside a boarded-up building across from a Metro station.
