Roses and crosses - shrine for Tyler Fludd | 5400 block of Silver Hill Road, District Heights MD

From a Prince George's County Police report: The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and charged two suspects in connection with a fatal shooting in District Heights. The suspects are 24-year-old Keyondre Joyner of Washington, DC and 18-year-old Jamiel Collins of Oxon Hill. They are charged with the murder of 20-year-old Tyler Fludd of Hyattsville.

On February 2, 2025, at approximately 5:20 pm, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 5400 block of Silver Hill Road, District Heights, Maryland. Officers located Fludd outside suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. The preliminary investigation revealed Collins and Fludd were known to each other. Joyner and Collins planned to rob Fludd and Joyner shot Fludd during the robbery. Joyner and Collins are charged with first-degree murder and related charges.

Memorial for Aaron Thomas Jr. | 2000 block of 19th Place SE DC

From a DC Police report: The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a double shooting that left one man dead in Southeast. On February 11, 2025, at approximately 2:44 p.m., Seventh District officers responded to a residential building in the 2000 block of 19th Place SE, Washington DC, for the report of a shooting. Officers located two adult males, conscious and breathing, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite all lifesaving efforts, one of the victims succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Aaron Thomas Jr., of Owings Mills, Maryland. 

I spoke with a young man in the neighborhood, who expressed that these losses always stay with you.

In memory of Surafel Zerihun | 3500 block of Georgia Avenue NW DC

From a DC Police report: Agents from the Force Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue NW, Washington DC. On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at approximately 6:10 p.m., a driver heading southbound on Georgia Avenue drove into oncoming traffic and struck a marked MPD cruiser that was traveling northbound. Following the collision, the suspect got out of his vehicle, produced a knife and reached into the cruiser through the driver’s side window and demanded the officer’s service weapon. The officer retreated to the passenger seat of the cruiser and gave multiple loud verbal commands for the suspect to drop the knife and move away from the cruiser. The suspect continued to threaten the officer with the knife, and the officer fired his service weapon, striking the suspect. The officer immediately called for assistance and exited the cruiser to attempt lifesaving measures on the suspect. At that time, the suspect picked up the knife and started walking toward the officer. The officer gave additional commands to suspect to drop the knife. The suspect refused the officer’s commands and then entered another marked police cruiser in the same block. Additional officers arrived at the scene and gave the suspect commands to exit the cruiser and drop the knife.

The suspect exited the cruiser and approached a vehicle exiting a parking lot in the same block. The suspect attempted to carjack that vehicle while still armed with the knife. An officer fired their service weapon, striking the suspect. Officers began performing lifesaving measures and DC Fire and EMS was called to the scene. After all lifesaving measures failed, the suspect was pronounced dead. 

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Surafel Zerihun, of Northwest. The suspect’s weapon was recovered on the scene. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MPD policy. The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia. The United States Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence in the case.

Shrine for Darius Young | 5000 block of Benning Road SE DC

From a DC Police report: On Thursday, March 13, 2025, at approximately 9:26 p.m., Sixth District officers responded to an establishment located in the 5000 block of Benning Road SE, Washington DC, for the report of a shooting. Officers located an adult male inside the establishment, suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital. Despite all lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital. During the investigation it was determined the shooting occurred outdoors in the 5000 block of H Street, Southeast. The decedent has been identified as 33-year-old Darius Young, of Southeast, D.C.

 Shrine to unknown person/s- near the corner of Southern Avenue and Central Ave SE, Washington DC. It is possibly in honor of Carlos Latney. but I am not certain.

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Thursday, May 4, 2023, in the 5600 block of B Street, Southeast. At approximately 3:40 pm, Sixth District officers responded to the listed location for the report of a man down. Upon arrival, members located an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services were on the scene and after finding no signs consistent with life, the victim remained on the scene until transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The decedent has been identified as 18-year-old Carlos Latney, of Accokeek, MD.
