Aiyanah Brown's memorial | 4300 block South Capitol Street SE DC
This touching street memorial is in the busy South Capitol Street corridor.
From a DC Police report: On Saturday, October 4, 2025, at approximately 3:17 a.m., Seventh District officers responded to the 4300 block of South Capitol Street SE, Washington DC, for the report of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female suffering from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene, and despite all life-saving efforts, the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as 20-year-old Aiyanah Brown of Southeast, DC.The preliminary investigation determined a 2009 Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound in the 4300 block of South Capitol Street, Southeast, at a high rate of speed and in the opposing lane of traffic. The Nissan Rogue struck the woman, who was attempting to cross the street outside of a crosswalk. The driver fled the scene, and officers located the vehicle a short time later unoccupied.
From NBC Washington: Aiyanah Kilah Brown was crossing the 4300 block of South Capitol Street early Saturday morning — just steps from her front door — when the driver of an SUV struck and killed her. The driver kept going, then abandoned the vehicle, a 2009 Nissan Rogue. The SUV was found abandoned nearby. “Imagine that was your daughter, your sister, if that was your mother, your aunt,” said her brother, Amari Brown. “You know, put yourself in my shoes, how much I’m hurting right now. I can’t even begin to describe how I feel when it comes to this because that was my other half, and you took that from me.” He says half his heart is gone — the part that belonged to his sister. The 20-year-old was returning home from being with friends, just after 3 a.m. Saturday. Amari Brown says the collision took the life of a young woman who had big plans — completing training to become an apartment manager and starting her own business someday. She was a loyal protector of her family and friends. “At times when I didn’t have words to speak for myself, times where I didn’t have the strength to, you know, stand up for myself my sister — you would think because I’m her brother, I’m her protector — she protected me,” her brother said. Family members say despite the presence of a speed camera, drivers regularly exceed the posted 30 miles per hour speed limit and run the red light. Friends are trying to draw attention to this as they grieve the loss of a young woman loved by many people. “This is devastating,” said her godsister, Janae Williams. “I really can’t, I can’t speak because it’s just crazy. She didn’t deserve it, and it’s just unbearable."
May this promising young woman know eternal peace and her family and friends be spared further grief.
