Memorial to Davon McNeal | 1400 block of Cedar Street SE DC

From a DC Police report: Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Saturday, July 4, 2020, in the 1400 block of Cedar Street SE, Washington DC. At approximately 9:21 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Davon McNeal, 11, of Southeast DC.

There has been a lot of attention paid to this tragedy. Davon was attending an anti-violence event organized by family members in his neighborhood when he was caught in a crossfire and slain.

By all accounts Davon was an outstanding young man, an athlete of great promise, and his vigil and funeral were attended by hundreds of family, dignitaries, neighbors, and supporters.

Young Mr. McNeal lived in an apartment complex directly behind the historic Frederick Douglass house.

May his memory ever be for a blessing.

There is much more material on this very sad situation in articles in the Washington Post.
One is here, the other here.

Thanks to reporter/activist John Muller for his help.

Peace. Peace.

Rest in Heaven; forever on the playground with the grandchildren of Frederick Douglass who tragically didn't live to adulthood. Davon McNeal will be a name that haunts the city; just like Donte Manning across town from 2005 and Charnice Milton from 2015.

thanks for coming thru Uncle Lloyd
when you come thru it is part of the healing process
this work is not easy; whether spoken or not folks appreciate you and what you have done for DC and for the community and family by recognizing the life and impact of those lost

Charnice was hard for me; this young man as well.

Thanks for connecting last week. All due respect, I don't want to ever see you again come thru but nonetheless we will meet again at another memorial to someone fallen before their time.

thanks for your friendship and taking my calls in the past week or so

God Bless
Peace Islam
Shalom
